Interested in volunteering with Milngavie Scouts?
Icarus Explorers runs the Duke of Edinburgh's (DofE) Award as part of a wider programme supporting young people to achieve Scouting's Top Awards (the Platinum and Diamond Chief Scout's Award and the highly prestigious King's Scout Award).
The costs of participating in DofE with Scouts are considerably lower than doing it at school as, in Scouts, it is run by volunteers. The only costs are the registration fees and food/transport for the expedition. For Scouts Scotland, the fees are currently £33.50 for Bronze and Silver and £40.50 for Gold.
Ready to sign up?
If you are already 14 and want to sign up, speak to one of the volunteers in the Explorers Team. You will be able to manage your progress using an app. To get you started, you can download the Bronze Welcome Pack.
Step 1. Get your plans approved
You will need to choose a goal in line with the section aim and principles and find an appropriate Assessor. You then need to get your plan approved by your DofE Leader.
Volunteering - Aim: To inspire young people to make a meaningful contribution within their communities, influence change and shape the world they want to live in. Volunteering Ideas
Physical - Aim: To inspire young people to achieve greater physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle through participation and improvement in physical activity Physical Ideas
Skills- Aim: To inspire young people to develop practical and social skills and personal interests. Skills Ideas
Step 2. Keep a logbook and gather your evidence.
Logbook - One your plans are approved, you will need to log your activity for each session for each of the 3 sections. You can use these log books (Volunteering Activity Log , Physical Activity Log, Skills Activity Log ) or create your own digital version. Please describe what you did at each session and make sure this links to your goal.
Evidence - In additon, you will need to upload some evidence (usually photos) to show you working towards your goal. Aim for at least 2 pieces of evidence to go with your completed log book.
Step 3. Ask your Assessor to complete and upload their report
The easiest way for an Assessor to provide a report is online. Make sure your Assessor has your edofe ID number, knows what your goal was and can comment on your progress. Guidance for Assessors can be found here: https://www.dofe.org/assessor/
Expedition
We will be able to help you arrange your expedition with other Explorers in the District. For Bronze, this is for 2 days and 1 night. Here is the latest kit guide: DofE Kit Guide April 2024. Scouts have a lot of kit available to borrow, so don't rush to buy things without checking with us first.
