Volunteers needed: Milngavie Trail Race on 7 June
A Young Leader is an Explorer Scout aged between 13.5 and their 18th birthday who is volunteering with a Beaver, Cub or Scout Section Leadership Team. We also operate the Scouts Young Leader Scheme for Explorers and other Young People aged 14-17 working towards their Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
There can sometimes be a wait for places to become available. Please complete this form to register your interest.
Essential Info:
Ratios - Young Leaders are still young people in Scouting, and whilst supporting a younger section, they fall under the responsibility of Team Leader for that section. They don't count towards ratios and must never be left alone with a section or in a 1:1 situation with a Leader.
Expectations - All Young Leaders receive a hard copy of the ESYL Logbook: ESYL Logbook V3 - Sept 2019 . There is a section on page 3 at the start on “Expectations”, which must be signed at the first session.
Goals - It can help to agree a goal for the placement. An example goal for a Young Leader at DofE Bronze might be “by the end of the 12 weeks the ESYL will (with support) plan, prepare, deliver and review a simple game or activity”.
Support: This blog has some handy tips on How to help Young Leaders be the best they can be.
Safeguarding – Every Young Leader will be given a hard copy of the Young People First - Orange Card and a Section Leader will need to talk it through with them.
Admin and Programme – Explorers should have their own OSM Member login and can be "shared" with the Section they are volunteering with so they can see the programme for the term. They should also be shared to the District Young Leader Unit.
DofE Assessment – At the end of the 3 or 6 months (as agreed individually), the ESYL will provide a DofE reference number so the assessor can write a short statement about their contribution using this link https://www.dofe.org/assessor/ .
Uniform - Explorers should wear their Explorers uniform for their placement. Other volunteers will be able to borrow a neckie.
Training - Young Leaders Module A is compulsory for all Young Leaders (whether or not they are also Explorers) and this must be completed within 3 months. The requirements are outlined in the logbook Microsoft Word - ESYL Logbook v3 - Sept 2019
District Young Leader Unit - This unit is responsible for coordinating all the training and support for Young Leaders across Great Western. They regularly run all of the Young Leader modules aiming to cover module A several times a year with the others at least once a year. Contact them at: gwdyoungleaders@gmail.com
Badges and Awards - Once Young Leaders have completed Module A they will receive the ESYL badge and woggle
